The cat age ×7 rule is wrong — here's why
The popular "multiply by 7" rule is a simplification that doesn't reflect feline biology. A 1-year-old cat has already reached sexual maturity and is equivalent to a 15-year-old human. By age 2, they're at 24 human years. Only after that does the aging rate slow to about 4 human years per cat year.
The AAFP formula
- Year 1 → 15 human years
- Year 2 → 24 human years (+9)
- Each year after → +4 human years
- Simple formula (age 2+): Human age = 24 + (cat age − 2) × 4

What cat life stage means for health
Mature (7–10 years = 44–56 human years)
This is when early age-related changes may begin. Annual bloodwork is recommended from age 7, including creatinine and the newer SDMA marker — which can detect kidney function loss at just 25% reduction, versus 75% for creatinine alone.
Senior (11–14 years = 60–72 human years)
Twice-yearly vet visits are now the standard recommendation. Key things to monitor: kidney function, blood pressure, thyroid levels (hyperthyroidism affects 10% of cats over 10), dental health, and mobility (arthritis is vastly under-diagnosed in older cats).
Super-senior (15+ years = 76+ human years)
These are the remarkable ones. With proper care, cats can live well into their 20s — the oldest verified cat, Creme Puff, reached 38 years in 2005. At this stage, comfort and quality of life become the primary focus.
